How to use the time unit converter
- Type a value in either box. Decimals with a comma or a point both work.
- Choose the units on each side, or press the arrows to swap them.
- The table below shows the value in every unit at once. Click a row to convert to that unit.
About time units
Below a second, time uses metric prefixes: a second is 1,000 milliseconds, 1,000,000 microseconds or 1,000,000,000 nanoseconds. Above it, the steps are 60 seconds to a minute, 60 minutes to an hour, 24 hours to a day and 7 days to a week. A day is 86,400 seconds and a week is 604,800.
Months and years are not fixed lengths, so this converter uses averages. A year here is 365.25 days (31,557,600 seconds), the average of three 365-day years and one leap year, and a month is a twelfth of that: 30.4375 days. Decades and centuries are 10 and 100 of those years. The Gregorian calendar averages slightly less, 365.2425 days, because it skips three leap years every 400 years.
A common slip is reading decimal hours as hours and minutes. 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes, not 1 hour 50 minutes, because a tenth of an hour is 6 minutes.
