- Use the formula hours = minutes ÷ 60.
- For example, 45 min is 0.75 h.
About minutes and hours
An hour has 60 minutes, so divide minutes by 60 to get hours. The answer is in decimal hours: 15 minutes is 0.25 h, 30 minutes is 0.5 h and 45 minutes is 0.75 h.
Timesheets, payroll and invoicing usually want decimal hours, while clocks and stopwatches show hours and minutes. Mixing the two up is a common mistake: 1 h 30 min is 1.5 hours, not 1.3.
Examples
- 45 min (one half of a soccer match) is 0.75 h
- 90 min (a full soccer match without stoppage time) is 1.5 h
- 480 min (an eight-hour working day) is 8 h
- 1,440 min (one day) is 24 h
