Terabytes to tebibytes

Convert TB to TiB (decimal to binary).

1 TB = 0.909495 TiBtebibytes = terabytes × 0.9094947018

How to convert terabytes to tebibytes

  1. Take the value in terabytes.
  2. Use the formula tebibytes = terabytes × 0.9094947018.
  3. For example, 1 TB is 0.909 TiB.

About terabytes and tebibytes

A terabyte (TB) is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A tebibyte (TiB) is 1,024⁴ = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, about 10% more. Multiply TB by 0.909495 to get TiB. That is why a drive sold as 2 TB shows as about 1.82 TB in Windows: the bytes are all there, but Windows counts in TiB and labels them TB.

The gap grows with each prefix, from 2.4% for KB to 4.9% for MB, 7.4% for GB and 9.95% for TB. At terabyte sizes the shortfall is large enough to matter when planning a NAS, a RAID array or a cloud volume, where tools such as Linux, ZFS and many cloud consoles show sizes in TiB.

Examples

  • 1 TB (a drive sold as 1 TB) is 0.909 TiB
  • 2 TB (a 2 TB external drive) is 1.82 TiB
  • 4 TB (a 4 TB NAS drive) is 3.64 TiB
  • 16 TB (a 16 TB hard drive) is 14.55 TiB
