About gigabytes and gibibytes

A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A gibibyte (GiB) is 1,024 × 1,024 × 1,024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes, about 7.4% more. Divide GB by 1.073742, or multiply by 0.931323, to get GiB.

This is the gap behind the “missing” space on new drives. A drive sold as 1 TB holds 1,000 GB. Windows counts in GiB but labels them GB, so it shows 1,000 ÷ 1.073742 = 931.32 and calls it 931 GB. The gap grows with each prefix: about 2.4% for KB, 4.9% for MB, 7.4% for GB and 10% for TB.

Examples

  • 64 GB (a 64 GB USB stick) is 59.6 GiB
  • 256 GB (a 256 GB SSD) is 238.42 GiB
  • 500 GB (a 500 GB SSD) is 465.66 GiB
  • 1,000 GB (a drive sold as 1 TB) is 931.32 GiB
