How to convert kilobytes to megabytes

  2. Use the formula megabytes = kilobytes ÷ 1,000.
  3. For example, 500 KB is 0.5 MB.

About kilobytes and megabytes

Divide KB by 1000 to get MB in decimal units. 750 KB is 0.75 MB. Upload forms, image compressors and web page budgets often switch between the two.

Windows Explorer shows file sizes in KB but means KiB (1024 bytes), and 1 MiB is 1024 KiB. So a file of exactly 1 MB (1,000,000 bytes) is listed as 977 KB. When a site says “max 1 MB” check which one it means, because 1000 KiB is already 1.02 MB.

Examples

  • 500 KB (a photo compressed for a web page) is 0.5 MB
  • 1,440 KB (a 3.5 inch floppy disk, sold as 1.44 MB) is 1.44 MB
  • 256 KB (the size limit for a custom Discord emoji) is 0.256 MB
  • 512 KB (the size limit for a Discord sticker) is 0.512 MB
