About gigabytes and terabytes
A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes in decimal (SI) units, so divide GB by 1,000 to get TB. 500 GB is 0.5 TB and 2,000 GB is 2 TB. Drive makers, cloud storage plans and macOS all count this way.
You meet this when adding up a photo library, game installs or backups to see whether they fit on a drive. Windows counts in powers of 1024 instead, so the “TB” it shows is really a tebibyte (TiB) of 1,099.51 GB. The GB to GiB converter covers that side.
Examples
- 128 GB (a 128 GB phone) is 0.128 TB
- 512 GB (a 512 GB laptop SSD) is 0.512 TB
- 1,000 GB (a drive sold as 1 TB) is 1 TB
- 50 GB (a dual-layer Blu-ray disc) is 0.05 TB
