How to convert terabytes to gigabytes
- Take the value in terabytes.
- Use the formula gigabytes = terabytes × 1,000.
- For example, 0.25 TB is 250 GB.
About terabytes and gigabytes
Multiply terabytes by 1,000 to get gigabytes. A 2 TB drive holds 2,000 GB and a 0.5 TB drive holds 500 GB. This is the decimal system used on drive boxes, cloud storage plans and phone spec sheets.
The other number you see, 1,024, comes from binary units: 1 tebibyte (TiB) is 1,024 gibibytes (GiB). A drive sold as 1 TB holds 931.32 GiB, which Windows shows as “931 GB”. Both describe the same bytes, counted in different units.
Examples
- 0.25 TB (an SSD sold as 250 GB) is 250 GB
- 1 TB (a 1 TB laptop SSD) is 1,000 GB
- 2 TB (a 2 TB cloud storage plan) is 2,000 GB
- 20 TB (a 20 TB hard drive for a home server) is 20,000 GB
