How to use the pressure converter

  1. Type a value in either box. Decimals with a comma or a point both work.
  2. Choose the units on each side, or press the arrows to swap them.
  3. The table below shows the value in every unit at once. Click a row to convert to that unit.

About pressure units

The SI unit of pressure is the pascal, one newton per square meter. It is tiny, so you mostly see kilopascals (kPa), hectopascals (hPa) or the bar, which is exactly 100,000 Pa. One bar is 14.5038 psi, the pounds per square inch used in the US for tires and compressors.

Weather uses hectopascals or millibars, which are the same size: 1 hPa = 1 mbar = 100 Pa. Standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is 101,325 Pa, which is 1,013.25 hPa, 14.6959 psi or 29.92 inches of mercury, the unit US forecasts use. Blood pressure is given in millimeters of mercury.

Watch for gauge versus absolute pressure. A tire gauge reads the pressure above the surrounding air, so a tire at 32 psi on the gauge is at about 46.7 psi absolute at sea level. Converting units does not change which kind you have.
