About pounds per square inch and bar
A psi is one pound-force per square inch, about 6,894.76 pascals. A bar is exactly 100,000 pascals, so 1 psi is 0.0689476 bar and 1 bar is 14.5038 psi. Divide psi by 14.5 to get bar, or multiply by 0.07 for a rough answer that comes out about 1.5% high.
US tire gauges, compressors and bike pumps read in psi, while car door placards, pumps and pressure washers in Europe often read in bar. Scuba divers meet the same split: tank pressures are quoted in psi in the US and in bar almost everywhere else.
Examples
- 32 psi (a typical car tire pressure) is 2.21 bar
- 14.7 psi (air pressure at sea level) is 1.01 bar
- 100 psi (a high-pressure road bike tire) is 6.89 bar
- 3,000 psi (a full aluminum scuba tank) is 206.84 bar
