How to convert atmospheres to pounds per square inch
- Take the value in atmospheres.
- Use the formula pounds per square inch = atmospheres × 14.69594878.
- For example, 1 atm is 14.7 psi.
About atmospheres and pounds per square inch
The standard atmosphere is defined as exactly 101,325 pascals, the average air pressure at sea level. That works out to 14.6959 psi, so multiply atmospheres by 14.6959 to get psi. Most people round it to 14.7.
Atmospheres come up in diving, where every 10 m (about 33 ft) of seawater adds roughly one atmosphere, and in physics and chemistry, where gas laws and pressure ratings are often given in atm.
Examples
- 1 atm (air pressure at sea level) is 14.7 psi
- 2 atm (the absolute pressure about 10 m under the sea) is 29.39 psi
- 0.33 atm (air pressure on the summit of Mount Everest) is 4.85 psi
- 0.74 atm (an airliner cabin pressurized to an altitude of 8,000 ft) is 10.88 psi
