How to convert a video

Container vs. codec

MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM are containers: boxes that hold a video stream, an audio stream and some details. The codec (H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1) is how the picture inside is compressed. Many “conversions” only need a new box, which is why they finish in seconds without any quality loss.
