How to convert MKV to MP4
- Drop your MKV videos into the box or choose them. You can convert several at once.
- MP4 is already selected. The progress shows next to each file.
- Download each MP4, or all of them together as a zip.
Why MKV files need converting
MKV, or Matroska, is a flexible container used for films, TV recordings and screen recordings. OBS suggests MKV because a recording isn’t lost if the program crashes. But iPhones, many smart TVs, iMovie and plenty of upload forms don’t accept MKV, while MP4 works almost everywhere.
Copy or re-encode
MKV and MP4 are both containers: boxes that hold a video stream and a sound stream. When the video inside is H.264 or HEVC, the converter just moves it into an MP4 box, which is quick and loses nothing. Other video has to be re-encoded, which takes longer and depends on your browser. To also make the file smaller, use the video compressor after converting.
