How to play the sequence memory test

  1. Press Start. One of the nine squares lights up.
  2. When it says Your turn, tap the squares in the same order. On a keyboard, keys 1 to 9 press the squares from top left to bottom right.
  3. Each level replays the whole sequence with one new step added at the end. One wrong square ends the game.

How the test works

The board has nine squares in a 3 by 3 grid. The game plays a sequence by lighting squares one after another, then waits for you to repeat it. Get it right and the same sequence plays again with one more square on the end.

Pressing a wrong square ends the game straight away and briefly shows the square you should have pressed. There’s no time limit on your answers, so this is about memory, not speed.

Tips

  • Trace the shape. Many people remember the path the light takes across the grid better than a list of positions.
  • Use numbers. Naming the squares 1 to 9 and saying the sequence to yourself turns it into a number to remember.
  • Watch the end. Everything except the last step is the sequence you already know, so the new square at the end deserves most of your attention.
