How to take the number memory test

  1. Press Start (or Space). A number appears with a bar that shows how long it stays.
  2. When it disappears, type the number you saw and press Enter.
  3. Get it right and the next number is one digit longer. One mistake ends the game and shows which digits were wrong.

How the test works

Each round shows a random number for a set time: 1.5 seconds plus half a second per digit. Then the number hides and a box appears for your answer. You can’t type while the number is on screen, so everyone gets the same look at it.

Level 1 is a single digit. Every correct answer adds one digit to the next number. The first wrong answer ends the game, and the result screen shows the number next to what you typed, with the wrong digits underlined.

Tips for a better score

  • Chunk the digits. 4 8 1 9 2 7 is easier as 481 927.
  • Say it in your head. Repeating the number silently while it’s shown keeps it fresh until you type it.
  • Type straight away. Short-term memory fades fast, so answer as soon as the box appears.
  • Play a few rounds. Scores vary from game to game, so your best over several games is a fairer number than one attempt.
