How to play the color sequence game
- Press Start (or Space). One pad lights up and plays its tone.
- Repeat it by clicking the same pad, or pressing Q, W, A or S (the keys sit in the same square as the pads). Then the sequence plays again with one more step added.
- Keep going as long as you can. The sequence plays faster after the 5th, 9th and 13th steps.
- Choose Try the round again if you’d like one second chance per round instead of the game ending at the first mistake.
Tips for longer sequences
Each color has its own note, so the sequence is also a short tune, and humming along can be easier than remembering the colors. Saying “green, red, red, blue” under your breath helps too: it uses your verbal memory as well as your visual memory.
Long sequences are easier in groups of three or four, the way you’d remember a phone number. The speed-ups after the 5th, 9th and 13th steps catch people out, so keep a steady rhythm on the fast rounds instead of rushing.
About the game
The color sequence game is based on Simon, the electronic memory game released in 1978 and named after the children’s game Simon Says. The game tests working memory, the short-term memory you use to hold a phone number in your head.
