How to resize a photo for Instagram
- Drop your photos into the box, choose them, or paste one.
- Each becomes a 1080 × 1350 portrait image. Crop to fill trims the edges, Fit inside keeps the whole photo with borders. For a square, type 1080 in both boxes.
- Download the photo, or all of them as a zip, and post it from your phone.
Getting the crop right
Crop to fill keeps the centre of the photo. That works for most portraits, food and product shots. If your subject sits near one edge, crop it roughly in your phone’s photo editor or with the crop tool first, then resize it here so the important part stays in frame.
Landscape photos lose the most when turned into a 4:5 portrait, since a wide picture has to give up its left and right sides. For a wide scene, Fit inside keeps everything and adds borders above and below. Another option is the square format with resize image to 1080 × 1080, which trims less from a landscape photo.
Why resize before posting
Instagram scales every upload to its own sizes and compresses it again. A photo that already has the right shape and width is scaled less, so it tends to keep more of its sharpness. In a carousel, Instagram gives every image the shape of the first one, so resizing the whole set here first lets you decide how each photo is cropped.
