How to resize a profile picture

  1. Drop your photo into the box, choose it, or paste it.
  2. It becomes a 400 × 400 square cropped to the centre. Type another size, such as 800 × 800, if a site asks for one.
  3. Download it and upload it as your new profile picture.

Taking a good profile picture

Profile pictures are seen small, often at about the size of a fingertip on a phone. A head-and-shoulders shot works better than a full-length photo, because your face takes up more of the square. Plain backgrounds and soft daylight from a window help too, as there’s less to distract from your face at that size.

Fill most of the square with your face but leave a little space above your head. Many apps show the picture as a circle, which trims the corners.

One photo for every site

Upload the same 400 × 400 picture everywhere and people will recognise you across sites. It’s big enough for the large view when someone opens your profile, and small enough to upload quickly. If you also want a round PNG with transparent corners, run the result through circle crop.
