How to link a Nether portal
- Stand where you want the portal in one dimension and note the X and Z from your coordinates (F3 on Java, or turn on Show Coordinates in Bedrock’s world settings).
- Choose the direction and type them in. The calculator divides by 8 going to the Nether and multiplies by 8 coming back.
- Build the matching portal at the block position shown, then light both. Walking through either one now takes you to the other.
Building a Nether highway
Because Nether distances are an eighth of Overworld ones, a tunnel in the Nether is the fastest way to cross your world. A common setup is a hub: one central portal near spawn, straight tunnels along the X and Z axes, and a portal at the end of each branch that comes out next to a base.
- Pick the Overworld spot for each base portal and convert it here.
- Dig the Nether tunnel to that spot and build the portal there first.
- Go through and check you arrive where you expected before building more.
Why portals link to the wrong one
The game links to the nearest portal it can find in the other dimension, and the search covers a wider area in the Overworld than in the Nether because of the scale. In Java Edition it looks within about 128 blocks in the Overworld and 16 blocks in the Nether. That’s why two Overworld bases a few hundred blocks apart can end up sharing one Nether portal. Converting the coordinates and building each Nether portal in its exact spot avoids it.
