How to convert megabits per second to megabytes per second
- Take the value in megabits per second.
- Use the formula megabytes per second = megabits per second ÷ 8.
- For example, 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s.
About megabits per second and megabytes per second
Internet plans and network gear are rated in megabits per second (Mbps), while browsers, game launchers and file copies show megabytes per second (MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so divide Mbps by 8: a 100 Mbps plan tops out at 12.5 MB/s.
Real downloads usually come in a little under that figure, because some of each connection is spent on protocol overhead and other traffic. Some apps also report speed in MiB/s (1,048,576 bytes), which reads about 5% lower than MB/s.
Examples
- 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet, also a common broadband plan) is 12.5 MB/s
- 480 Mbps (USB 2.0 Hi-Speed) is 60 MB/s
- 1,000 Mbps (gigabit fiber or Ethernet) is 125 MB/s
- 5,000 Mbps (USB 3.0 (5 Gbps)) is 625 MB/s
