Data transfer rate converter

Mbps, MB/s, Gbps and more.

100 Mbps in every unit

How to use the data transfer rate converter

  1. Type a value in either box. Decimals with a comma or a point both work.
  2. Choose the units on each side, or press the arrows to swap them.
  3. The table below shows the value in every unit at once. Click a row to convert to that unit.

About data rate units

Internet and network speeds are sold in bits per second, while browsers and download managers show bytes per second. A byte is 8 bits, so divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s: a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most 12.5 MB/s, and a 1 Gbps connection at 125 MB/s.

In practice you see a bit less than that, because protocol overhead and network conditions take a share. The conversion gives the ceiling, not a guarantee.

Watch the capital letters: a lowercase b means bits and an uppercase B means bytes, so Mb and MB differ by a factor of 8. These rates use decimal prefixes, so 1 Mbps is 1,000,000 bits per second. Some programs show MiB/s instead, and 100 Mbps is about 11.92 MiB/s.
