About gigabytes and megabytes

Multiply GB by 1000 to get MB in decimal units. 1.5 GB is 1,500 MB. This is how storage is sold and how macOS reports file sizes.

Windows uses binary units but labels them GB and MB. In that system 1 GiB is 1024 MiB, and a file of exactly 1 GB (1,000,000,000 bytes) shows as about 954 MB. If a size looks about 7% smaller than you expected, the 1000 vs 1024 difference is usually why.

Examples

  • 1 GB (a 1 GB mobile data allowance) is 1,000 MB
  • 4.7 GB (a single-layer DVD) is 4,700 MB
  • 3 GB (an hour of HD video on Netflix) is 3,000 MB
  • 16 GB (a USB flash drive) is 16,000 MB
