Why the half hour

India uses one time zone for the whole country, set at UTC+5:30. That half hour is why New York and India never line up on the hour: when it’s on the hour in one place, it’s half past in the other.

IST is also used for Irish Standard Time and Israel Standard Time, so when a colleague writes IST, it’s worth checking which one they mean. This page always uses India. Some browsers label India’s offset as GMT+5:30 instead of IST in the result; it’s the same time.
