How to convert Eastern Time to UK time

  1. Type the New York time and the date.
  2. From is Eastern Time and To is UK (London), which follows GMT in winter and BST in summer.
  3. Read the London time. From 7 pm Eastern onward it’s already the next day in the UK.

A New York morning is a London afternoon

The working overlap between the two cities is the New York morning. If you start at 9 am Eastern, you have about three hours before London heads home, so put anything that needs a UK reply first.

Markets follow the same pattern. The New York Stock Exchange opens at 9:30 am Eastern, which is 2:30 pm in London, so the two exchanges are open at the same time only in the London afternoon.

If a UK contact writes GMT in summer, they nearly always mean whatever London is on, which is BST (UTC+1). Converting to London rather than to a fixed GMT offset gives the right answer either way.
