How to convert cups (US) to fluid ounces (US)
- Take the value in cups (US).
- Use the formula fluid ounces (US) = cups (US) × 8.
- For example, 1 cup is 8 fl oz.
About cups and fluid ounces
A US cup is exactly 8 US fluid ounces, so multiply cups by 8. Half a cup is 4 fl oz and a quarter cup is 2 fl oz.
The same ladder runs all the way up: 2 cups make a pint, 4 cups a quart and 16 cups a gallon. This only works for fluid ounces, which measure volume. A cup of flour does not weigh 8 ounces.
Examples
- 1 cup (one US cup) is 8 fl oz
- 2 cups (one US pint) is 16 fl oz
- 4 cups (one US quart) is 32 fl oz
- 16 cups (one US gallon) is 128 fl oz
