- Use the formula cups (US) = fluid ounces (US) ÷ 8.
- For example, 12 fl oz is 1.5 cups.
About fluid ounces and cups
Divide US fluid ounces by 8 to get US cups. 4 fl oz is half a cup, 12 fl oz is a cup and a half and 32 fl oz is 4 cups, or one quart.
Drinks, broth cartons and milk are labelled in fluid ounces, while recipes ask for cups, so this is how you work out how much of a bottle or can a recipe uses.
Examples
- 12 fl oz (a US soda can) is 1.5 cups
- 16.9 fl oz (a half-liter water bottle) is 2.11 cups
- 20 fl oz (a 20 oz soda bottle) is 2.5 cups
- 64 fl oz (a half-gallon carton) is 8 cups
