How to convert cups (US) to tablespoons (US)
- Take the value in cups (US).
- Use the formula tablespoons (US) = cups (US) × 16.
- For example, 0.125 cups is 2 tbsp.
About cups and tablespoons
A US cup is exactly 16 US tablespoons, so multiply cups by 16. A quarter cup is 4 tablespoons, half a cup is 8 and three quarters of a cup is 12.
It helps when you are halving a recipe and a measure gets too small for your cups, or when the right cup is missing. Tablespoons are also how US butter sticks are marked, so recipes that ask for cups of butter convert neatly.
Examples
- 0.125 cups (an eighth of a cup) is 2 tbsp
- 0.25 cups (a quarter cup) is 4 tbsp
- 0.5 cups (half a cup, one US stick of butter) is 8 tbsp
- 1 cup (one US cup) is 16 tbsp
