How to change the speed of a video

  1. Drop your video into the box or choose it. Several videos at once work too.
  2. Type a Speed or pick one: 2 plays twice as fast, 0.5 at half speed. Choose whether to keep the sound, and whether its pitch should stay natural.
  3. Watch the result next to the original, then download the MP4. Change the speed and it is made again.

Speeding up and slowing down

Changing a video’s speed changes when each frame is shown, not what is in it. At 2× every frame is shown for half as long, so the video ends in half the time. When that would mean more frames per second than the original had, the extra frames are left out, which is how timelapse and fast forward clips are usually made. At 0.5× every frame is shown twice as long.

The sound is handled separately. Played faster, sound normally rises in pitch, which is why sped up voices sound like cartoon characters. With Keep the sound’s pitch ticked, the audio is cut into short overlapping slices that are spaced closer together or further apart and blended, so its length changes but its pitch does not.

Common uses

  • Tutorials and screen recordings: 1.25× or 1.5× trims dead time without making speech hard to follow.
  • Timelapses: 4× with the sound removed turns a long recording of a sunset, a build or a drawing into a short clip. For more than 4×, run the result through again.
  • Replays and details: 0.5× or 0.25× shows a fast moment, such as a golf swing or a trick, more clearly.
  • Fitting a time limit: a 70 second clip at 1.17× fits a 60 second slot.

To keep only part of the video, cut it first with trim video. To make it play backwards, use reverse video.
