How to take the 3 minute typing test

  1. The test is set to 3 minutes. Click the words or just start typing; the timer starts with your first letter.
  2. Keep a steady pace. Press space after each word, and backspace into a wrong word if you want to fix it.
  3. When the three minutes are up you get your WPM, accuracy, raw speed and a speed graph.

Pacing yourself over three minutes

The first minute of a longer test is the easy part. Most of the score comes from keeping a steady rhythm after it, so don’t sprint at the start. Aim for a pace you could hold for the whole three minutes, and if you make a mistake, fix it quickly or move on rather than stopping.

Relax your shoulders and keep your wrists loose. Tension creeps in over a few minutes and slows you down.

Comparing your results

Your best three minute score is saved separately from your one minute and five minute scores, so you can see how much your speed drops as the test gets longer. A small drop shows good stamina; a large one suggests practising longer runs. Try the 5 minute typing test for a full endurance check.
