How to take the 1 minute typing test

  1. The test is set to 1 minute. Click the words or start typing; the clock starts on your first letter.
  2. Type each word and press space to move on. Mistakes show in red, and you can go back into a wrong word with backspace.
  3. After 60 seconds you see your WPM, accuracy and best score at this length. Press Esc or Restart for new words.

Making a one minute test count

A single one minute run says more about that minute than about you. Take three or four tests in a row and look at the middle score, not the best. The first run is usually the slowest while your fingers warm up.

Sit as you normally would and type the way you normally type. If you look at the keyboard during everyday typing, you’ll do it here too; that’s fine for a true baseline, and it’s the habit to work on if you want to get faster.

Harder one minute tests

The test uses real sentences with capitals and punctuation, the way everyday writing looks. Untick them for plain lowercase text, tick Numbers to mix in digits from the top row, or tick Stop on errors to fix every mistake as you go. Your best scores are kept separately for each length on this device. For a timer without the typing, there’s the 1 minute timer.
