Elements and modalities
The twelve signs fall into four elements, fire, earth, air and water, with three signs each. They also fall into three modalities. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start at the equinoxes and solstices; fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) fall in the middle of each season; mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) close each season.
