How to convert words to pages
- Choose Words to pages and enter your word count, or Pages to words and enter a page count.
- Pick the Font, Font size and Line spacing your assignment or document uses.
- Read the estimate, with single and double spaced page counts and how long the text takes to read and to say aloud.
The assumptions
Pages are estimated from a page of 12 pt text with 1-inch margins, then scaled: halving the font size fits about four times as much (twice as many lines, each twice as long), and double spacing halves it. These are the words per page the calculator starts from:
| Font (12 pt) | Single spaced | 1.5 spaced | Double spaced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Times New Roman | 500 | 333 | 250 |
| Calibri | 475 | 317 | 238 |
| Arial | 440 | 293 | 220 |
| Georgia | 430 | 287 | 215 |
| Verdana | 380 | 253 | 190 |
| Courier New | 350 | 233 | 175 |
The Times New Roman figures are the usual rule of thumb; the others are our estimates from how much wider each font sets than Times New Roman. Letter and A4 pages hold about the same amount with 1-inch margins.
Hitting a page count
If an essay must fill a set number of pages, write to the word count the calculator gives, then check in your word processor. Changing the font or spacing to stretch an essay is easy to spot, and most assignments set the font and spacing anyway. To count the words you have so far, paste your text into the word counter.
