How to count characters
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- The character count, with and without spaces, updates as you type.
- Check Character limits to see how much room is left for each place you might post it.
Character limits worth knowing
Most limits count every character you type, including spaces and line breaks. Going over usually means the text is cut off with an ellipsis, as with titles in Google results, or split into several messages, as with SMS.
Characters vs. bytes
A character is what you see. A byte is how it’s stored. Plain English letters take one byte each in UTF-8, but accented letters take two and emoji take four. Databases and some older systems limit bytes rather than characters, so text with lots of emoji or non-Latin script can hit those limits sooner than the count here suggests.
