How to underline text

  1. Type the words you want underlined into Input.
  2. A line appears under every character as you type, including the spaces between words.
  3. Copy it and paste it where you need it. Each line of input gets its own underline.

How Unicode underlining works

Each character is followed by a combining low line, U+0332. Combining marks attach to the character before them, so the line is drawn under that letter, and neighbouring lines join up into one. The original letters are still there, so the text stays readable. It also gets twice as long: “Deadline Friday” is 15 characters, and the underlined version is 30.

Good uses for underlined text

  • Headings in long plain-text posts, notes or emails sent from apps that strip formatting.
  • A key term or date you want to stand out: D̲e̲a̲d̲l̲i̲n̲e̲ ̲F̲r̲i̲d̲a̲y̲.
  • Book titles in places that follow the old typewriter habit of underlining instead of italics.

Keep it short. Long underlined passages look cluttered and the marks make text harder to edit later.
