When PNG is the right choice
PNG keeps text, lines and flat colours perfectly sharp and supports transparency, which makes it a good home for scanned documents, signatures, logos and diagrams that arrive as TIFF. Every browser and app can open it, unlike TIFF, which most browsers apart from Safari can’t show.
TIFF features that don’t carry over
A TIFF can hold things a PNG can’t: several pages, CMYK colour for print, and 16 bits per channel. Pages become separate PNG files, CMYK is turned into the RGB colours screens use, and 16-bit images are reduced to 8 bits per channel. For printing, keep the original TIFF; for sharing and the web, the PNG is easier to use.
