How to split people into random teams
- Type or paste the names into Names, one per line. A single line of names separated by commas works too. A comma inside a line is kept, so Smith, John stays one person.
- Under Split into, choose Number of teams or People per team, then set How many.
- The teams appear as cards a moment after you stop typing. Click Shuffle again or press Space for a new draw, and Copy or Download for a text list.
Fair ways to pick teams
Having captains choose in turn is slow and someone always gets picked last. A random split is quicker and nobody can say it was rigged. Put the result on a shared screen or read it out so everyone sees the same draw.
If skill levels vary a lot, split in two rounds. Run the generator once with only the strongest players, then once with everyone else using the same number of teams. Merge Team 1 with Team 1, Team 2 with Team 2 and so on. Each team then gets a fair share of both groups.
Pairs, groups and odd numbers
- Pairs: set People per team to 2. With an odd number of people this leaves one person on their own, so use Number of teams instead. 11 people in 5 teams gives four pairs and one group of three.
- Too many teams: ask for more teams than there are names and everyone ends up in a team of one.
- One person, not a split: to pick a single volunteer or winner, use the wheel spinner.
