How to shuffle a list
- Paste your list into Input, one item per line.
- The shuffled list appears in Result straight away. Every change to the input shuffles it again.
- Copy the new order, or click Shuffle again for a different one.
Ways to use a shuffled list
- Set a random order for presentations, turns in a game or a rota.
- Mix up quiz questions or flashcards so nobody learns the order instead of the answers.
- Randomize a playlist, a reading list or the order you work through tasks.
- Split people into two teams: shuffle the names, then take the top half and the bottom half.
- Take a random sample: shuffle the list and keep the first 20 lines.
How a fair shuffle works
The Fisher-Yates shuffle walks through the list from the last line to the first. At each step it swaps the current line with a randomly chosen line at or above it. With 8 lines there are 40,320 possible orders (8 × 7 × 6 × … × 1), and each one has the same chance of coming out. The shuffle runs in your browser, so the list is never uploaded.
