A yard is exactly 0.9144 m, so a square yard is 0.9144² = 0.83612736 m². Multiply square yards by 0.836 to get square meters. For a quick estimate take off a sixth: 60 sq yd gives 50 m² against the exact 50.17.
Carpet, turf and flooring are sold by the square yard in the US, and in parts of India residential plots are measured in square yards (gaj). Converting to m² lets you compare with metric floor plans and prices.
