How to convert square feet to square yards
- Take the value in square feet.
- Use the formula square yards = square feet ÷ 9.
- For example, 9 ft² is 1 yd².
About square feet and square yards
A yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards: a 12 × 12 ft room is 144 sq ft, or 16 sq yd.
Carpet, artificial turf, sod and some fabrics are still priced by the square yard in the US, while rooms are measured in feet. Measure each room, multiply length by width for square feet, divide by 9, then add some extra for waste and pattern matching.
