About area units
Area units are squares of length units, so the factor is the length factor squared. A meter is 3.28084 feet, but a square meter is 3.28084 × 3.28084 = 10.7639 square feet. Using the plain length factor for an area is the most common mistake, and it makes the answer more than three times too small.
Floor space is given in square meters in most countries and in square feet in the US. Land is measured in hectares or acres. A hectare is 10,000 m², a square 100 m on each side, and an acre is 43,560 square feet, about 4,046.86 m². One hectare is 2.47105 acres.
Because the inch is exactly 2.54 cm, the imperial area units have exact metric values too: a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m², and a square mile is exactly 640 acres, about 2.59 km².
