How to preview a Google search result
- Type or paste your Title tag and Meta description. The bars show their width in pixels against the usual limits.
- Add the page URL and the site name to see the line above the title, and the words someone might search for to see them in bold.
- Switch between Desktop and Mobile, and shorten the text until nothing important is cut off.
Writing titles and descriptions that get clicks
Lead the title with what the page is, in the words people search for, and keep the brand to the end. Every result on the page competes for the same click, so be specific: “Return a parcel in 3 steps” says more than “Returns”. In the description, say what someone gets from the page and why it’s worth the click. Google bolds words that match the search, so including the main phrase naturally makes the result stand out.
Mobile results
On phones the result is narrower, so long titles wrap onto a second line instead of being cut at the side, and descriptions take more lines. The mobile preview wraps the text at a typical phone width and cuts the title after two lines and the description after three, as many phone results look. Check that the start of both still says what the page is about.
