How to convert quarts (US) to cups (US)
- Take the value in quarts (US).
- Use the formula cups (US) = quarts (US) × 4.
- For example, 0.5 qt is 2 cups.
About quarts and cups
A US quart is 2 pints or 4 cups, so multiply quarts by 4 to get cups. 2 quarts is 8 cups, 1.5 quarts is 6 cups and half a quart is 2 cups.
Stock, broth, buttermilk and heavy cream are sold in quart cartons in the US, and slow cookers and pots are sized in quarts. Recipes usually ask for cups, so you convert to see how much of a carton you need or whether a recipe fits the pot.
Examples
- 0.5 qt (a pint) is 2 cups
- 1 qt (a carton of broth) is 4 cups
- 4 qt (a gallon) is 16 cups
- 6 qt (a 6 quart slow cooker or pressure cooker) is 24 cups
