Why convert PNG to WebP
WebP was designed by Google for the web. It compresses far better than PNG while still supporting transparency, which makes it the usual choice for images on websites: smaller files load faster, and page speed is part of how search engines rank pages.
Keep the original PNG if you plan to edit the image again. WebP at quality below 100 is lossy, so repeated edits and saves would slowly lose detail.
Picking a quality
- 90 to 100: icons, logos and screenshots with small text.
- 75 to 85: photos and most website images.
- 60 or below: thumbnails and background images where size matters most.
