How to make a meme

  1. Drop in a picture, choose a file, or paste a screenshot straight from your clipboard.
  2. Type your Top text and Bottom text, then move the Text size slider until it fits.
  3. Download your meme and send it to the group chat.

How to write a meme that works

Most good memes follow the same pattern: the top line sets things up and the bottom line delivers the twist. Keep each line short. A meme gets read in about the time it takes to scroll past it, so if a caption needs three lines, it probably needs a rewrite.

  • Say it out loud. If it doesn’t sound funny, capital letters won’t help.
  • Let the picture do half the work. The text should add something the image doesn’t already say.
  • Specific beats general. “When the printer jams five minutes before the meeting” lands harder than “when things go wrong”.

Getting the picture right

Crop the image first so the face or object people should look at fills the frame, and leave some room at the top and bottom for text. A plain or blurry area there keeps the letters easy to read, though the black outline copes with most backgrounds.

The text size is a share of the picture’s shorter side, so it looks the same on a small screenshot or a big photo. If your meme is too heavy to send, compress it or choose JPG as the format.
