About cubic centimeters and milliliters
A cubic centimeter (cm³, often written cc) is exactly the same volume as a milliliter, so 5 cc is 5 ml and 250 cc is 250 ml. The two names come from different habits: cc from measuring a solid cube, ml from measuring liquid.
Engine sizes are given in cc (a 125 cc scooter, a 1,600 cc car), which you divide by 1,000 to get liters, so 1,600 cc is a 1.6 L engine. In medicine cc still appears on older syringes, but safety groups such as ISMP recommend writing mL instead, because a handwritten cc can be misread.
Examples
- 1 cm³ (one milliliter) is 1 ml
- 5 cm³ (a 5 ml oral syringe dose) is 5 ml
- 125 cm³ (the engine of a 125 cc scooter) is 125 ml
- 1,600 cm³ (a 1.6 liter car engine) is 1,600 ml
