How to remove the background from an image

  1. Drop in your photos, choose them, or paste one. Each is cut out in turn; the first takes longer while the AI model downloads.
  2. Drag the slider to compare before and after, and use the zoom to check the edges.
  3. Keep the background Transparent for a PNG cut-out, or pick white or any colour, then download one image or all of them as a zip.

How it works

The cut-out is made by ORMBG (Open Remove Background Model), an open-source model built on IS-Net, a network designed to separate the main subject of a photo from everything behind it. Its author trained it mainly on pictures of people, and in our tests it also cut out products, fruit and pets cleanly. The model looks at a 1024 px copy of your photo and decides, pixel by pixel, how much belongs to the subject; that mask is then scaled to your full-size photo, so the result keeps every pixel of the original.

Getting a clean cut-out

  • Contrast helps. A subject that stands apart from the background in colour or brightness gives the cleanest edge.
  • One subject per photo. Crop a group or a busy scene down to the part you want first with crop image.
  • Use a decent-sized photo. Tiny images give soft edges; image upscaler can enlarge a small one first.
  • Check the edges. Zoom in on hair, fingers and thin parts before you download. Shadows on the floor are sometimes kept as part of the subject.

Transparent PNG, white or colour

A transparent PNG keeps only the subject, ready to drop onto a slide, a design or another photo. Marketplaces such as Amazon ask for product photos on pure white (#FFFFFF), so choose White and JPG for those. A solid colour suits profile pictures; JPG files are much smaller than PNG when there’s no transparency to keep.
