The vaporwave look
Vaporwave is a music and visual style from the early 2010s internet: slowed-down 80s pop, pastel sunsets, old computer graphics, Roman busts and Japanese text. Wide letters like sunset drive became its signature because they look like Latin text set in a Japanese typeface. Today “aesthetic” text turns up in bios, playlist names, mood-board captions and lo-fi channel titles.
What turns wide
| Character | Example |
|---|---|
| Letters | aesthetic |
| Numbers | 1987 |
| Punctuation and symbols | Hi! #1 |
| Spaces | Become the wide ideographic space |
| Accented letters and emoji | Stay as typed |
Every printable character on a US keyboard has a fullwidth version, so symbols like ! and # widen along with the letters. Because these characters sit in the main part of Unicode alongside Chinese and Japanese, they also display on almost every device.
