About turns and degrees
One turn is one full rotation, 360°. Multiply turns by 360 to get degrees: a quarter turn is 90°, a half turn is 180° and two and a half turns are 900°. Revolutions, rotations and cycles all mean the same thing here.
Turns are the natural unit for knobs, screws, valves, servo and stepper motors and gear trains, while drawings, CNC code and protractors work in degrees. Board sports name tricks by degrees too, so a 540 is one and a half spins.
Examples
- 0.25 turn (a quarter turn) is 90 °
- 0.5 turn (a half turn, an about-face) is 180 °
- 1.5 turn (a 540 in skateboarding or snowboarding) is 540 °
- 2.5 turn (a 900, two and a half spins) is 900 °
