How to convert gradians to degrees
- Take the value in gradians.
- Use the formula degrees = gradians × 0.9.
- For example, 1 grad is 0.9 °.
About gradians and degrees
A gradian (also called a grad or gon) splits a right angle into 100 parts, so a full circle is 400 grad. Since a circle is also 360°, 1 grad is exactly 0.9°: multiply gradians by 0.9 to get degrees. 50 grad is 45° and 300 grad is 270°.
Gradians were designed to fit the metric system, and surveying and civil engineering instruments in parts of Europe still use them. Most people meet the unit by accident, when a calculator is set to GRAD mode and trigonometry answers come out wrong.
Examples
- 1 grad (one gradian) is 0.9 °
- 50 grad (half a right angle) is 45 °
- 100 grad (a right angle) is 90 °
- 400 grad (a full circle) is 360 °
