How to compare two texts
- Paste the first version into Original text and the second into Changed text, or drop a text file on each box.
- Differences appear below as you type. Removed lines are red, added lines green, and the exact words that changed are highlighted.
- Turn on Ignore case or Ignore spaces to skip differences that don’t matter to you.
When a diff helps
- Checking what someone changed in a contract, policy or essay before you accept it.
- Comparing two versions of a configuration file, a list or a piece of code.
- Finding the one line that differs between two long exports or logs.
- Proofreading a copy against the original.
Reading the result
Each row shows a line from the original on the left and the matching line from the changed text on the right, with line numbers. A red line was removed and a green line was added. When a line was edited rather than replaced, both versions sit next to each other and the words that changed are marked more strongly. Long runs of identical lines are folded away; click the bar to show them.
