How to make a ringtone

  1. Drop a song into the box or choose it. The first 30 seconds are selected.
  2. Drag the selection to the part you want, or type the start time. It can’t get longer than the limit you pick, 30 or 40 seconds. Play it to check.
  3. Pick iPhone or Android and click Make ringtone. The file downloads straight away.

Picking the right part

The best ringtones start straight on something recognisable, usually the chorus or a distinctive intro, because a call is often answered in the first few seconds. Drag the selection along the waveform to find it: the shape makes loud choruses and quiet verses easy to spot. Press play to hear just the selected part, and nudge the start with the arrow buttons until it begins cleanly on a beat.

Fade in and out adds a half-second fade at the start and a 1.5 second fade at the end, so the ringtone doesn’t start with a click or stop abruptly when it loops.

Formats

  • iPhone (M4R): AAC sound in an MPEG-4 file with the .m4r extension, the format iPhones use for ringtones.
  • Android (MP3): plays on every Android phone and most other devices.
  • M4A: the same sound as M4R with the usual extension, for phones and apps that want .m4a.

For general audio cutting with no length limit, use trim MP3. To make a quiet song louder first, try volume booster.
